GERMANY

Historic cities, Christmas markets and journeys through the heart of Europe.

OUR GERMAN ADVENTURES

From the historic streets of Berlin and the maritime character of Hamburg to the bustling cities of Frankfurt, Munich and Düsseldorf, Germany has been part of our travels for years. Each visit has offered something different, from discovering new cities and local food to experiencing the country's famous Christmas markets.

In December 2026, Germany becomes a key chapter in our latest adventure: The Reverse Polar Express. Arriving from Scandinavia by overnight sleeper, the journey continues through Hamburg and Karlsruhe before crossing into France on the long road to the Mediterranean.

Whether we're exploring a city for a weekend or passing through on a much bigger adventure, there's always another reason to return.

GOOD TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

TRANSPORT

Germany’s rail network is extensive. Use the DB Navigator app for real-time ICE updates and mobile tickets. Seat reservations are highly recommended for long-distance travel.

FOOD

Beyond Bratwurst, try local specialties like Schnitzel and Spätzle. Bakeries open early for fresh rolls. Remember that lunch is often the main warm meal of the day.

CHRISTMAS MARKETS

Markets typically run from late November to late December. Bring cash for Glühwein and decor. Evenings are magical but crowded; visit in the early afternoon for a calmer experience.

PRACTICAL TIPS

Cash is still king in many small shops and restaurants. Most shops are closed on Sundays. Tipping (Trinkgeld) is generally 5-10% in sit-down restaurants.
