SWEDEN

A land of boundless forests, silent archipelagos, and the warm, amber glow of midnight sun. Sweden offers a timeless blend of sleek minimalism and ancient wilderness, where every train journey through the pines reveals a new layer of Scandi soul.

OUR SWEDISH ADVENTURES

Sweden is another chapter of our travels, and in December 2026, it's taking centre stage in the Reverse Polar Express.

Arriving in Stockholm by overnight ferry from Helsinki, we'll have time to explore the capital's historic streets, waterfront, Christmas markets and famous archipelago before continuing our journey south. Then comes one of the highlights of the adventure: boarding an overnight sleeper train bound for Hamburg, leaving Scandinavia behind as we make our way towards the Mediterranean.

For now, this is a taste of what's to come. We'll be adding our own photographs, discoveries and experiences as we explore Sweden, along with the practical details of travelling through the country by ferry and rail.

RAIL & TRANSPORT

The SJ rail network is the spine of Swedish travel. Efficient SJ high-speed trains and overnight sleepers connect major cities with the wild North.

WHEN TO VISIT

Midsummer offers endless daylight, while December brings a dark, atmospheric glow with Christmas markets and proper winter rigour in the North.

FOOD & FIKA

Fika is the mandatory coffee break with a kanelbulle. Beyond cinnamon buns, expect fresh seafood in Gothenburg and classic meatballs in the capital.

PRACTICAL ADVICE

Sweden is almost exclusively cashless. Download the SL or SJ apps for transit, and always pack layers regardless of the season for unpredictable weather.
