HELSINKI

Helsinki combines grand historic architecture, modern Nordic design and a beautiful Baltic waterfront. From the imposing Helsinki Cathedral to its bustling market halls, distinctive libraries and traditional saunas, Finland's capital offers plenty to discover.

Our first Helsinki adventure begins in December 2026, when the city becomes the starting point for the Reverse Polar Express. With Christmas festivities and Finnish Independence Day falling during our visit, we're looking forward to experiencing Helsinki at one of its most atmospheric times of year.

THE PREVIEW

Upcoming Winter Journey

On 4–6 December 2026, we'll be arriving in Helsinki to mark the grand beginning of our Reverse Polar Express adventure. This upcoming visit is all about soaking in the magical pre-Christmas atmosphere as we explore the city's iconic waterfront and neoclassical architecture. We've timed our stay to coincide with Finnish Independence Day on 6 December, a time when the capital feels truly special. From sampling local market delicacies to experiencing the crisp Baltic air, we're preparing for a cinematic start to our journey south before we board the Tallink ferry bound for Stockholm.

PLANNING YOUR VISIT

GETTING AROUND

The city's iconic green and yellow trams are the best way to explore. Use the HSL app for easy mobile tickets. The center is compact and pedestrian-friendly, perfect for discovering hidden design boutiques on foot.

PRACTICAL TIPS

Pack high-quality thermal layers for winter. Finland is almost entirely cashless; digital payments are the standard. Don't miss a public sauna session—it's an essential part of the local way of life.

LOCAL FLAVORS

Try traditional karjalanpiirakka (rye crust pastries) and salmon soup at the Old Market Hall. Finnish coffee culture is serious business—take time for a proper 'fika' break with a korvapuusti.

DESIGN & CITY

Explore the Design District for cutting-edge Finnish brands. From the neo-Renaissance architecture of Senate Square to the modern wooden curves of Kamppi Chapel, the city is a visual masterclass in built heritage.

The Reverse Polar Express Starts Here
